Are EVs actually cleaner on India's coal-heavy grid?
An honest look at well-to-wheel emissions, grid mix, battery manufacturing and where the break-even really sits.
The fair version of the question
An electric car has no tailpipe, but the electricity has to come from somewhere — and a substantial share of India's generation is still coal. Comparing tailpipe emissions to zero is not an honest comparison.
The correct measure is well-to-wheel: everything from extracting the fuel or generating the power through to turning the wheels, plus the emissions embedded in manufacturing the vehicle itself.
Running emissions, measured properly
On the current all-India grid mix, a mid-size electric car emits roughly 100–130 g CO₂ per kilometre well-to-wheel. The equivalent petrol car sits between 160 and 190 g including refining and distribution.
So the electric car is cleaner today, but by a margin closer to 30–40% than the 100% the tailpipe figure implies. That margin widens every year the renewable share of generation grows — and it is the only vehicle category that gets cleaner while parked in your driveway.
The manufacturing debt
Battery production is emissions-intensive, and an EV therefore starts life with a larger carbon debt than a comparable petrol car — typically 30–50% higher at the factory gate.
On Indian driving patterns and the current grid, that debt is repaid somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000 km. Past that point the electric car is ahead for the rest of its life, and further ahead again if the pack is recycled or given a second life in stationary storage.
What actually moves the number
Charging time-of-day matters more than most owners realise. Daytime charging in a solar-heavy state draws a meaningfully cleaner mix than the evening peak, when coal and gas peakers carry the load.
This is one of the quieter benefits of scheduled, delegated charging: when the exact hour of the session is flexible, it can be moved to the cleanest and cheapest part of the day rather than whenever you happened to have a free evening.
