The real cost of running an EV in India in 2026

Petrol versus electric over five years — running cost, servicing, resale and the charging time nobody prices in.

Fuel is where the gap opens

A petrol hatchback returning 18 km/l costs roughly ₹5.6 per kilometre at current pump prices. The equivalent electric hatchback, charged at a public DC station, lands between ₹1.6 and ₹2.4 per kilometre depending on tariff and charging speed. Charge at home on a residential slab and that figure drops further still.

Across 15,000 km a year — a typical Indian urban usage pattern — that difference alone is between ₹48,000 and ₹60,000 annually. Over five years it comfortably exceeds the price premium on most electric variants sold today.

Servicing is structurally cheaper

An electric drivetrain has no engine oil, no timing belt, no clutch, no exhaust and no fuel filter. Regenerative braking means brake pads routinely last twice as long. What remains is tyres, cabin filters, coolant for the battery pack and brake fluid.

Owners typically report annual service costs between a third and a half of a comparable petrol car. The exception is the traction battery itself, which is where the manufacturer warranty — usually eight years or 160,000 km — matters more than the service schedule.

The cost nobody puts on the spreadsheet

Every comparison table stops at rupees. None of them price the hour you spend at a public charger, twice a week, for the life of the car.

At two sessions a week and 70 minutes a session, that is roughly 120 hours a year — three full working weeks — spent waiting for electrons. It is the single most under-discussed line in EV ownership, and it is the specific problem HOOP was built to delete.

So is it worth it?

For anyone driving more than 800 km a month in a city with reasonable charging density, the five-year arithmetic favours electric decisively. Below that, the case rests more on emissions and driving experience than on cost.

The variable that changes the answer fastest is not the price of the car. It is how much of your own time charging consumes.
